Case study

The RSPCA uses Capture to support its front-line staff carrying out investigations in the field, improving efficiency and security, and reducing costs.

Developed by investigative technology firm, Altia, software known as Capture is transforming the speed, accuracy, and cost-efficiency of nationwide animal abuse investigations, helping the RSPCA rescue teams to get to the animals who need them most.

Capture streamlines data collection and securely centralises evidence, helping the charity to address reports of animal abuse with greater effectiveness.

All cases run by the RSPCA – around 1000 a year – now use Capture.

The challenge

  • The RSPCA Inspectorate is made up of over 350 front-line staff who are responsible for investigating possible cases of animal cruelty and animal-related organised crime.

  • One call comes into the RSPCA emergency line every 15.6 seconds while its National Control Centre is open.

  • With such demand on its services, the RSPCA is always looking at more efficient ways of working, maximising the time its officers have to respond to urgent reports of animal cruelty and neglect.

The solution

With demand on their service growing, the RSPCA was keen to explore whether replacements to traditional pocket notebooks and digital cameras to record and collate evidence could help.

By using the Capture mobile app, the RSPCA completely replaced paper pocket notebooks and digital cameras for all investigators in the field. The officers now use Capture to record their activities and observations as they investigate animal cruelty and neglect.

Grainne Casey, Head of Special Operations, RSPCA said:

“Throughout its 200 year history, the RSPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare, but like many other charities, we’re under incredible pressure and only have limited resources.

“It’s vital that our front-line animal rescuers carry out a full and thorough investigation when following up on reports of animal cruelty or neglect, and Capture has played a vital role to streamline that work. The technology effectively reduces the time that our officers spend on admin processes which helps us to investigate alleged cruelty more efficiently and reduce costs.”

The results

Capture has improved data security as well as saving the RSPCA both time and money:

  • Time saving: No need for investigators to travel to hand over completed notebooks and collect new ones. Some officers were travelling for up to one hour each time they needed to safely store a pocket notebook.
  • Improved accuracy: Audio transcription saves time and has improved accuracy, with interviews that previously took one hour now being completed in a shorter time.
  • Cost saving: No need to purchase digital cameras.
  • Security and evidential compliance: The information captured is highly secure on an Microsoft Azure server and is captured to evidential standards.
