James Grew, Altia CRO, was interviewed by ‘SME Today’ about his perspective on international growth
The article “The Smarter Path to Global Growth – Why Strategy Must Come Before Scale” encourages leaders to ask five key questions before expanding internationally:
1. Why are we expanding internationally?
Clarify the purpose: Is it growth, diversification, talent access, or customer demand? Expansion should align with long-term business goals not just the lure of “bigger markets.”
2. Is our product or service a good market fit?
Assess whether your offering genuinely solves a local need, fits local culture, and complies with regulations, rather than assuming what works at home will work abroad.
3. Which market makes the most strategic sense?
Choose based on more than size: consider logistics, legal frameworks, language, time zones, and potential partnerships. Sometimes a smaller but better-aligned market is smarter.
4. Do we have the right people and resources in place?
Success depends on experienced team members leading the expansion and on-the-ground knowledge. Bringing in local talent at the right time is essential.
5. How will we measure success before scaling up further?
Start small with a “proof of concept.” Define early KPIs (customers, revenue, engagement) to validate your approach before investing heavily.
In summary, global growth isn’t just about speed, it’s about strategic clarity, local insight, and disciplined scaling.
